14. பக்குவன்

இறைவனைப் பக்தியோடு வணங்கும் முறையை அறிந்தவர்கள், இறைவனை அடைவதை மட்டுமே குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டு இருக்கும்போது,

When those who know the manner of worshipping God with devotion hold the reaching of God as their one goal,

ஒரு குற்றமும் அறியாத, புனிதமான இறை நிலையை அடைந்த குருவை இறையருள் அவர்களுக்குக் காட்டி அருளும்.

the grace of God shows them a guru who knows not one fault and who has attained the pure state of God.

அந்தக் குருவின் மூலம் இறைவனை அடையும் வழியை அறிந்துகொண்டவர்களே, நல்ல வழியை அறிந்துகொண்ட பக்குவர்கள் ஆவார்கள்.

Those who have come to know, through that guru, the way by which God is reached are the ripe ones who have known the good way.

நல்லது இல்லாத மற்ற ஆசைகளின் வழியே போகின்றதை மட்டுமே அறிந்துகொண்டவர்கள், மீண்டும் மீண்டும் இறந்து பிறப்பதற்கான வழியையே அறிந்தவர்கள் ஆவார்கள்.

And those who have known only the going along the way of the other desires, which are not good, are people who have known only the way of dying and being born again and again.

உன்னை எப்போது அடைவேன் என்ற துடிதுடிப்பில், உன்னை அடைவதற்குத் தடையாக இருக்கின்ற ஆசைகளை ஒழித்தேன்; பரம்பொருளே, உன்னைத் தேடி,

In the trembling of wondering when I shall reach you, I have destroyed the desires that stood as a barrier to reaching you. Supreme One, searching for you,

அலைந்து திரிந்து, நீ எழுந்தருளிய இடங்களுக்கெல்லாம் சென்று, உன்னைப் போற்றி வணங்கி அடைந்தேன்; இனி வேறு யாரோடும் சேர மாட்டேன், உன்னிடம் மட்டுமே சேருவேன்.

I wandered about, went to every place where you have risen and taken your seat, praised and worshipped you and reached you. From now on I will join with no one else; I will join with you alone.

நீ கருணை கொண்டு, அடியேனுடைய நல்வினை தீவினை ஆகிய இரு வினைகளையும் சிதைத்து அழித்து, உன்னைத் தவிர வேறு எதிலும் எனது சிந்தனை போகாதபடி மற்ற அனைத்துச் சிந்தனைகளும் தீர்ந்துபோகும்படி செய்து,

Take pity, shatter and destroy both kinds of deed in me your servant, the good and the evil, and make every other thought be finished, so that my thinking goes nowhere but to you.

அவற்றை உதைத்து உடைந்துபோகும்படி செய்ய மாட்டாயா? அடியேனை மனமுவந்து உன் தொண்டனாக ஆட்கொண்டு அருள மாட்டாயா?

Will you not kick them apart so that they break? Will you not gladly take me as your servant and grant your grace?

இறைவனை அடைய வேண்டும் என்று துடிதுடிக்கின்ற போதே, பரம்பொருள் என்று அறியப்படுகின்ற, அனைத்திற்கும் மூல விதையான இறைவன்,

At the very moment of trembling with the wish to reach God, God who is known as the Supreme and who is the root seed of everything,

அடியவருக்குள் ஒரு விதையை விதைக்கின்றான்; அது மாயை நீங்கினால் உணரக்கூடிய இறை சக்தி; குருவின் அருளால் தலை உச்சிக்கு மேலே வீற்றிருக்கின்ற அந்த இறை சக்தியைத் தரிசித்து,

sows a seed within the devotee, and that seed is the divine power which can be realized once illusion departs. By the guru's grace one beholds that divine power seated above the crown of the head,

இறைவனை அடைவதற்குத் தடையாக வேறு வழிகளில் சிதைந்துபோகின்ற சிந்தனைகளைச் சீர்படுத்தி, அவை இறைவன் மேல் மட்டும் எப்போதும் இருக்கும்படி நிறுத்தி,

sets right the thoughts that scatter away along other paths and so bar the reaching of God, and stops them so that they rest on God alone and always,

இறைவனோடு எப்போதும் சேர்ந்தே இருக்கின்ற பக்குவமுள்ள அன்பர்களுக்கு, இறைவன் தமது அருளைக் கொடுத்து அருளுவான்.

and to such ripe loving ones, who remain always joined with God, God gives his grace.

ஏற்றுக்கொண்டாலும் ஒரு நல்ல குருவைத் தேடி ஆராய்ந்தே ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள்.

Even in accepting one, seek out and examine a good guru before you accept him.

உங்களுடைய உள்ளம், பொருளாகிய ஆன்மா, உடல், ஆவியாகிய உயிர் ஆகிய நான்கையும் சேர்த்துக் குருவிற்கே உடைமையாகக் கொடுத்துச் சரணாகதி அடைந்துவிடுங்கள்.

Your heart, the soul which is your substance, your body and the life which is your breath, all four together, give over to the guru as his own property and surrender yourself.

எள்ளின் அளவிற்குக்கூடச் சிறிதளவும் மனம் தவற விடாமல் குருவிடமே சரணாகதியாக நின்று,

Standing there in surrender at the guru alone, not letting the mind slip even by so much as a sesame seed's measure,

குருவின் அருளால் உண்மை ஞானத்தைத் தெளிவாக அறிந்துகொண்டால், இறைவனின் திருவடியை நீங்கள் அடையலாம்.

if by the guru's grace you come to know true wisdom clearly, then you may reach the sacred foot of God.

பௌர்ணமி அன்று விசாக நட்சத்திரம் வருகின்ற நாளில் இருந்து ஆரம்பித்து, அடுத்து வருகின்ற விருச்சிக இராசியிலிருந்து கடக இராசி வரை உள்ள நாள்களில்,

Beginning from the day on which the star Visakam falls on a full moon, and through the days that follow from the sign of Viruchigam to the sign of Kadagam,

குருவிடமிருந்து பெற்ற மந்திரத்தை ஓதிக்கொண்டு இருந்தால், ஒரு நாளில் தாமாக இருப்பது இறைவனே என்று உணர்ந்துகொள்ள முடியும்.

if one keeps reciting the mantra received from the guru, then one day it becomes possible to realize that what one is oneself is God.

அதன் பிறகு, தாம் செய்கின்ற அனைத்துச் செயல்களுக்கு உள்ளேயும் இறைவனே இருந்து செய்கின்றான் என்பதை உணர்ந்து, தான் என்கின்ற தன்மை இல்லாமல் இறைவனை நினைக்க முடிந்தவர்களைத் தவிர வேறு யாருக்கும்,

After that, apart from those who realize that within every act they do it is God who is present and doing it, and who can then hold God in thought without the sense of I, for no one else

இறைவன் முதலாகிய அனைத்து உண்மைகளையும் அறிந்துகொள்ளுவது இயலாது.

is it possible to know God the first of all and all the truths.

இறைவனை அடைவதை மட்டுமே குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டு செய்கின்ற சாதகத்தில் முழுமை பெற வேண்டுமென்றால், மாபெரும் மணியாக இருக்கின்ற இறைவனின் மேல் தமது சிந்தனைகளை வைத்து, அவனருளால் தூய்மையாக ஆகிவிட்ட சிந்தனையோடு,

If one is to come to fullness in the sadhana done with the reaching of God as the only goal, one must set one's thoughts upon God who is the great gem, and, with a mind made pure by his grace,

பேரழகு நிறைந்திருக்கின்ற இறைவன் வீற்றிருக்கின்ற குருவிடமிருந்து தாம் பெற்ற போதனைகளைக் கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டும்.

keep the teachings received from the guru in whom God, filled with great beauty, is seated.

அப்படிக் கடைப்பிடித்தால், நெருப்பில் மூடிய விறகுக் கட்டையும் எரிந்து நெருப்பாகவே ஆகிவிடுவது போல, தம்முடைய வினைகள் அனைத்தும் தம்மை விட்டு விலகி அழிந்துபோய்விடும்.

Keep them so, and just as a log of firewood covered over in fire burns and becomes fire itself, all one's deeds will fall away and perish.

அதன் பிறகு, சிலம்புகளை அணிந்து பேரழகோடு இருக்கும் இறைவனின் திருவடிகளைத் தரிசித்து அவனது அருளைப் பெறலாம்.

After that one may behold the sacred feet of God, wearing anklets and full of great beauty, and receive his grace.

நன்மை தீமை எது நடந்தாலும் அதனால் பாதிக்கப்படாமல் சாத்வீக குணத்தோடு, அதாவது சாந்தத்தோடும் அமைதியோடும் இருந்து, குருநாதர் அருளிய பல தத்துவங்களைத் தனது மனதிற்குள் வைத்து நினைத்துத் தியானித்து,

Staying unaffected by whatever good or evil befalls, in a sattvic nature, that is in calm and quiet, and holding within his own mind the many principles the guru has granted and contemplating them,

இறைவன் உண்டு என்று நம்பி அவனை அடைவதை மட்டுமே குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டு, அதற்காக வேதம் சொல்லுகின்ற வழிமுறைக்கான தோற்றமாகிய தவ வேடமாகவே தாம் ஆகி,

believing that God is and taking the reaching of him as his one goal, and becoming himself the very ascetic's guise that is the outward form of the way the Vedas prescribe for that,

வினைகளின் பயனால் கிடைக்கப்பெற்ற இந்தப் பிறவிக்கும் இனி எடுக்கப்போகின்ற பிறவிகளுக்கும் அஞ்சி, இனிப் பிறவியே எடுக்காமல் இருப்பதற்கு வேண்டிய தர்மத்தின் வழிமுறையைக் கடைப்பிடித்து,

fearing both this birth got by the fruit of deeds and the births still to be taken, and keeping the way of dharma needed for taking no further birth,

தமது ஆசைகள் பற்றுக்கள் அனைத்தையும் குருவிடம் சரணடைந்து சமர்ப்பிக்க முடிந்தவன் எவனோ, அவனே சிறந்த உண்மையான சீடன் ஆவான்.

whoever is able to surrender to the guru and offer up all his desires and attachments, he is the excellent and true disciple.

நிலையானதும் நிலை இல்லாததும் எவ்வாறு இருக்கின்றது என்பதைத் தனக்குள்ளேயே ஆராய்ந்து அறிந்து, நிலையான இறைவனை உணர்ந்து,

Search out within yourself and learn how the enduring and the unenduring are, and realize God who is the enduring one.

அவன் மேல் உண்மையான அன்பினால் உருகும்போது, இறைவன் தனது திருவருளால் ஒரு உண்மையான குருவினைக் காட்டி அருளுவான்.

When you melt with true love for him, God by his own sacred grace will show you a true guru.

அப்படி இறைவன் காட்டி அருளிய குருவின் மீது கொண்ட பக்தியின் மூலம் உண்மை ஞானத்தைப் பெறுவதற்கு அவரது திருவடிகளைப் பணிந்து,

Through the devotion held towards the guru God has thus shown, bow at his sacred feet to receive true wisdom,

அந்தக் குருவின் அருளால் கிடைக்கின்ற பேரானந்தச் சக்தியே வேண்டும் என்று தன்னையே முழுவதுமாகக் குருவிடம் ஒப்படைத்துத் தருபவனே, உண்மையான சீடன் ஆவான்.

and whoever then gives himself over wholly to the guru, asking only for the power of great bliss that comes by that guru's grace, he is the true disciple.

தங்களின் திருவடியை என் தலை மீது வைத்து அருளுங்கள் குருநாதரே என்று வேண்டி நிற்கின்ற, தனது உடல் பொருள் ஆவி எல்லாம் குருவிற்கே உடைமையாக்கிய சீடனின்

A disciple stands pleading, place your sacred foot upon my head and grant me grace, O teacher; and he has already made his body, his possessions and his life the property of the guru alone.

வேண்டுகோளுக்கு இணங்கி, அதன்படியே திருவடியை வைத்த மாபெரும் தலைவனாகிய, இறைவனாகவே இருக்கின்ற குருவின் திருவருளால், மாயையாகிய பிறவி நீங்கப்பெற்று,

The guru, who is the great lord and is God himself, consents to that plea and places his sacred foot accordingly, and by that sacred grace the birth which is illusion is removed.

அவரின் திருவடியை வைத்த சீடனின் உடல் இறைவனது திருவருள் சக்தியின் மூலம் முழுமையடையும்போது,

When the body of the disciple on whom that sacred foot was placed is made complete through the power of God's sacred grace,

குருவின் திருவடியினால் பெற்ற ஞானத்தினால் உண்மை ஞானியாகி, ஒரு குற்றமும் இல்லாமல் இருப்பவனே உண்மையான சீடன் ஆவான்.

whoever becomes a true gnani by the wisdom got from the guru's sacred foot, and stands without one single fault, he is the true disciple.

குருவின் திருவடியினால் பெற்ற ஞானத்தினால் உண்மை ஞானியாகிய சாதகரிடம், இதுவரை உலகப் பற்றுக்களின் மேல் இருந்த ஆசைகள் விலகிப்போக விலகிப்போக, அவற்றின் மேல் இனிப் பற்று வராது.

In the sadhaka who has become a true gnani by the wisdom got from the guru's sacred foot, the desires that until now rested upon worldly attachments withdraw and withdraw, and no attachment to them comes to him again.

அந்தப் பற்றானது, இறை நிலையில் இருக்கின்ற தமது குருநாதரின் மேலேயே அதிகமாகக் கூடி வரும்.

That attachment gathers instead, and gathers more strongly, upon his own guru, who stands in the state of God.

அதன் பிறகு, இதுவரை அவரது கைக்குச் சரிவரக் கிடைக்காத நான்கு விதமான சாதகங்களும் அவரது கைவசப்படும்படி அவர் பேறு பெறுவார்.

After that he wins as a boon the four kinds of sadhana which until then had never come properly into his hand.

அதன் பிறகு, அகம் என்னும் உள்ளுக்குள்ளும் புறம் என்னும் வெளியிலும் நடத்துகின்ற ஆராய்ச்சியின் மூலம், ஞானத்தின் உச்ச நிலைக்குச் சென்றுகொண்டே இருப்பார்.

And after that, by enquiry carried on both within and without, he goes on rising towards the highest state of wisdom.

பரம்பொருளின் பேருண்மைகளை உணர்த்துகின்ற ஞான குருவானவர், மிகவும் பக்குவம் பெற்ற சீடனுக்கே அவற்றை உணர்த்துவார்.

The guru of wisdom, who makes the great truths of the Supreme known, makes them known only to a disciple who has become very ripe.

அனைத்துமாக இருந்தாலும் அதனோடு சேர்ந்து இல்லாமல் விட்டு விலகி நிற்கின்ற, அசையாச் சக்தியாகிய பரம்பொருளின் எல்லைக்கு உள்ளே சீடனைக் கொண்டு சென்று,

He carries the disciple inside the bound of the Supreme, the unmoving power, which is everything and yet stands away and is not joined with it,

கிழக்கோடு தெற்கு வடக்கு மேற்கு ஆகிய நான்கு திசைகளையும் கொண்டிருக்கின்ற அனைத்துப் பொருள்களிலும் மறைந்திருக்கின்ற, பேருண்மையாகிய பரம்பொருளை உணர்த்துவார்கள்.

and there makes known the Supreme, the great truth hidden within all the things that fill the four directions, the east and the south, the north and the west.

ஆன்மாக்களுக்கெல்லாம் அதிபதியாகிய ஆண்டவனைத் தமது மனதிற்குள் தியானித்தே இவை அனைத்தையும் அவர்கள் செய்வார்கள்.

All this they do by contemplating within their own mind the Lord who is sovereign over all souls.

உண்மையான ஞானத்தை அறிந்தவராகிய குருவானவர், இறைவனின் திருவடிகளைப் பணிந்து வணங்கி, இறையருளால் அண்டத்தில் இருக்கின்ற ஐந்து பூதங்களையும் தமக்குள் இருக்கின்ற ஐந்து பூதங்களோடு இணைத்து, அவற்றை இறைவனாகவே உணர்ந்து வணங்குகின்ற நிலையை அடைந்தவராக இருக்க வேண்டும்.

The guru who has known true wisdom must bow and worship at the sacred feet of God, and must have reached, by the grace of God, the state of joining the five elements that are in the cosmos with the five elements within himself and worshipping them as God himself.

தமக்குள் இருக்கின்ற குறைகள் எவை என்பதை இறைவனிடம் எடுத்துக் கூறி, அவனருளால் அவற்றை நீக்கிவிட்டு, இறையருளால் புனிதமான குணத்தைக் கொண்டு, அதற்கு நன்றி கூறி இறைவனைப் போற்றி வணங்குபவராகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும்.

He must tell God what the flaws within him are, have them removed by his grace, take on a pure nature by that grace, give thanks for it, and praise and worship God.

மாயை எனும் சிறையுடன் சேர்ந்து, தன்னுடன் இருக்கின்ற உடல் பொருள் ஆகிய அனைத்தும் தான் என்று நினைக்கின்ற சீடருக்கு, நீ என்பது இந்த உடம்போ உடைமைகளோ அல்ல, நீ என்பது உனக்குள் இருக்கின்ற ஆன்மா என்பதை மாயையை நீக்கிக் காட்டி அருளுபவராகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும்.

To the disciple who, bound up with the prison called illusion, thinks that the body and the possessions that are with him are himself, he must remove that illusion and show him that you are not this body nor these possessions, that you are the soul within you.

இறைவனுடைய அருளோடு சேர்ந்திருந்து, சீடருடைய அறிவுக்குப் புரியும்படி உண்மை அறிவை அறிவிக்கின்றவராகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும்; இப்படி இருக்கின்ற குருவே அழிவில்லாத சன்மார்க்கத்தில் இருப்பவர் ஆவார்.

And he must stay joined with the grace of God and make true knowledge known in a way the disciple's own understanding can hold. The guru who is thus is the one standing in the imperishable Sanmargam.

அனைத்து விதமான ஆசைகளையும் விடுகின்ற வழிமுறையையே வேதத்தின் எல்லையாகிய அனைத்தும் சொல்லுவதால்,

Because everything that stands at the boundary of the Veda says that the discipline is the giving up of every kind of desire,

உலக வாழ்க்கையை ஐந்து புலன்களின் வழியே சென்றுகொண்டு இருப்பதை மாற்றிவிட்டு, அனைத்து விதமான எண்ணங்களையும் நீக்கி ஒடுங்குதலைச் செய்து,

one turns worldly life away from going along the way of the five senses, removes every kind of thought and comes to stillness,

அனைத்து விதமான ஆசைகளையும் விட்டுவிடுவதில் மிகவும் சிறந்திருக்கின்றவரும், அனைத்து வேதங்களுக்கும் எல்லையாக இருக்கின்ற இறை நிலையில் இருக்கின்றவரும் ஆகிய குருவின் திருவடிகளை,

and the sacred feet of the guru, who is supreme in the giving up of every kind of desire and who stands in the state of God that is the boundary of all the Vedas,

பணிந்து வணங்குவதை மட்டுமே தலையாகக் கொண்டு வாழ்பவனே உண்மையான சீடன் ஆவான்.

he who lives holding the bowing and worship at them as his one head, he is the true disciple.

எதிலும் உண்மையாகவே இருத்தல், எப்போதும் உண்மையையே பேசுதல், அனைத்து உயிர்களின் மேலும் அன்பும் கருணையும் கொண்டிருத்தல், உண்மையான ஞானமாகிய அறிவோடு இருத்தல், எது நடந்தாலும் அதனால் பாதிக்கப்படாமல் இருத்தல்,

Being true in everything, speaking always only the truth, holding love and compassion towards all living beings, being with the understanding that is true wisdom, and staying unaffected by whatever may happen,

உண்மையான குருவின் திருவடிகளை அதன் நிழல் போல எப்போதும் நீங்கிவிடாமல் சேர்ந்தே இருத்தல்,

never leaving the sacred feet of the true guru but staying always with them as their own shadow does,

சித்தத்தில் இறைவனது பேரறிவு ஞானத்தைத் தெளிவாக உணரும்படி குருவின் அருளோடு தெளிவாக ஆராய்ந்து அறிந்துகொள்ளுதல்,

searching out and knowing clearly, with the guru's grace, so that the great knowledge and wisdom of God is clearly realized in the mind,

மனிதர்களுக்கு மேலான நிலையில் அற்புதமான சக்திகளை உலக நன்மைக்காகச் செய்து காட்டுதல், ஆகிய இவைகளோடு இருப்பவனே உண்மையான சீடன் ஆவான்.

and, in a state above the human, showing forth wondrous powers for the good of the world: whoever lives with all of these is the true disciple.
