திருமூலர் அருளிய திருமந்திரம்
7. யோகம்

இறைவனை அடைவதற்கென்று குருநாதர் அருளிய நெறிமுறைகளின் வழியே மனத்தைச் செலுத்தி, அந்த வழிமுறையில் சிறிதும் குறையின்றி முறைப்படி செய்து, அதிலேயே மனத்தை ஒன்றி வைத்து,

Directing the mind solely along the path graciously given by the guru, following it without the slightest lapse and fixing the mind wholly upon it,

தரையில் ஊன்றி வைத்த கழி அசையாமல் இருப்பதைப் போலவே தாமும் எதனாலும் அசையாமல் இருந்து,

and remaining unmoved by anything, like a stake driven firmly into the ground,

மழை பொழிந்தாலும் காற்று அடித்தாலும் சிறிதும் அசையாத அந்தக் கழியைப் போலவே, தம்மைச் சுற்றி எது நிகழ்ந்தாலும் அதனால் பயம் என்ற உணர்வே சிறிதும் இல்லாமல்,

unmoved even when rain pours or wind beats, so that nothing stirs the slightest feeling of fear,

இறைவனை அடைவதை மட்டுமே குறிக்கோளாகக் கொண்டு அவனைத் தமக்குள் அறிந்து தெளிந்தவர்களுக்கே இறைவனோடு ஒன்றாகக் கூடுவது இயலும்.

only those who so know and grow clear about God within themselves can become one with him.

ஊழிக்காலம் ஒவ்வொன்றிலும் ஊழியாக இருந்து அனைத்தையும் அழித்து மீண்டும் உருவாக்கும் இறைவனை, யோகத்தின் வழியாகச் சென்று தமக்குள் உணர்ந்தவர்களைத் தவிர,

No one else but those who realize within themselves God, who is aeon within every aeon, destroying and remaking all,

வேறு யாராலும் அவனை உணர இயலாது; அவ்வாறு உணர்ந்துகொண்ட யோகியர்கள் அந்த ஊழிக்காலத்தோடு ஒட்டாமல் விலகி இறைவனை மட்டுமே சார்ந்திருப்பார்கள்;

can realize him; such yogis remain untouched by that aeon and cling to God alone;

பாற்கடலில் பள்ளிகொண்டிருக்கும் திருமாலும், அவரது தொப்புள் கொடியில் இருக்கும் தாமரை மலரில் வீற்றிருக்கும் பிரம்மனும் ஆகிய தெய்வங்களும் ஊழிக்காலத்தோடு ஒட்டாமல் இருக்கிறார்கள்;

even Thirumal, asleep on the milk ocean, and Brahma, on the lotus at his navel,

ஊழிக்காலம் எவ்வளவுதான் இவர்களை அழிக்க முயற்சி செய்தாலும், அதனால் அழிக்க முடியாத மாபெரும் உயரத்தில் இருந்து இறைவன் அவர்களைப் பாதுகாக்கிறான்.

remain untouched however the aeon strives, for God protects them from a height it cannot destroy.

மலராத பூவிற்குள்ளும் நறுமணம் கலந்திருப்பது போலவே,

Just as fragrance lies mingled within a flower even before it blooms,

ஜீவாத்மாவிற்குள்ளும் சிவம் எனும் பரம்பொருள் கலந்திருக்கிறது;

so the supreme reality that is Siva lies mingled within the individual soul;

பூ மலர்ந்தபின் அதன் நறுமணம் வெளிப்படுவது போலவே, வரைந்து வைத்த ஓவியம் போல எதனாலும் அசையாமல் யோகத்தில் இருந்து இந்த முறையைத் தமக்குள் உணர்ந்தறிந்தவர்களுக்கு,

for those who, unmoved like a painted picture, remain in yoga and realize this within,

தரையில் நடப்பட்ட கழியைப் போல அசையாமல் இருக்கும் அந்த யோகியர்களின் பக்குவப்பட்ட ஆன்மாவிற்குள் சேர்ந்திருக்கும் சிவம், கஸ்தூரியோடு சேர்ந்திருக்கும் நறுமணம் போல வெளிப்படும்.

the Siva within their ripened soul emerges, like fragrance mingled with musk.

முக்திக்கான ஞானத்தைப் பெற்றுவிட்டோம் என்று சொல்பவர்கள், தமக்குள்ளேயே இருக்கும் பரம்பொருளைக் கண்டு உணராமல் இருக்கிறார்கள்;

Those who say they have already attained the wisdom for liberation fail to see the supreme reality within them;

நறுமணம் மலருக்குள் மறைந்திருப்பது போல, குருநாதனாகிய இறைவன் ஜீவாத்மாவிற்குள் மறைந்திருக்கிறான்;

God, the guru, lies hidden within the soul as fragrance lies hidden within a flower;

சிந்தை முழுவதும் அவன் மேல் வைத்து யோகம் செய்து, தமக்குள் அவனை அறிந்து தெளிவு பெற்று, அதன் பயனால் மும்மலங்களாகிய இருளை நீக்கினால்,

fixing the mind on him, practicing yoga, growing clear, and removing the darkness of the three impurities,

முதன்முதலில் இறைவனிடமிருந்து பிரிந்து வந்து பிறவி எடுப்பதற்கு மூலகாரணமாக இருக்கும் ஆசைகள் நீங்கி, இனிப் பிறவியே இல்லாத நிலையை அடையலாம்.

removes the very root desires that first caused parting from God and birth, ending rebirth.

பாடல் #1457-இல் உள்ளபடி, எழுதப்பட்ட எழுத்துக்களும், அவற்றோடு சேர்ந்து பாடும் பாடல்களும், இவற்றைக் கொண்டிருக்கும் அறுபத்து நான்கு கலைகளும்,

As in verse 1457, letters, songs and the sixty-four arts that hold them,

அசையாத மனதுடன் இல்லாமல் அலைகின்ற மனதுடன் செய்யப்பட்டால், இறைவனை அடையாமல் வாழ்க்கையை வீணடிக்கும் பழிக்குத் தலைமையாக இருக்கும் பாசத்தையும் அதனால் எடுக்கும் பிறவிகளையும் நீக்க மாட்டா;

done with a wandering mind, cannot remove the bond that wastes a life, nor the births it brings;

பாசத்தையும் பிறவியையும் நீக்கும் வழிக்குத் தலைமையாக இருக்கும் சந்திர கலையோடு அக்கினி கலையையும் சூரிய கலையையும் சேர்த்துப் பயன்படுத்தும் வழிமுறைக்குத் தலைமையாக இருக்கும் யோகமே,

only the yoga that joins the lunar strand with the fire strand and the solar strand,

அசையாத மனதுடன் செய்யும்போது அவற்றை நீக்கும்; அந்த வகையைத் தாம் செய்த யோகத்தால் உணர்ந்ததாக இப்பாடல் கூறுகிறது.

practiced with an unmoving mind, removes them, as this verse declares having been realized through yoga.

பாடல் #1461-இல் உள்ளபடி, எழுத்துக்களும் பாடல்களும் அவை அடங்கிய அறுபத்து நான்கு கலைகளும் ஆகிய எதைச் செய்தாலும், இறைவனை அடையவேண்டும் என்ற விருப்பத்தில் அசையாத மனதுடன் நின்று செய்பவர்களே உண்மையான தவம் புரிபவர்கள் ஆவார்கள்;

As in verse 1461, whatever is done standing firm and unmoved in the wish to reach God becomes true;

அவ்வாறு விரும்பி நின்று செய்தால், அந்தச் செயலால் கிடைப்பதே மாயை நீங்கிய உண்மையான உணர்வு நிலை ஆகும்;

done so, it becomes true realization, the state of awareness free of maya;

அவ்வாறு விரும்பி நின்று அசையாத மனதுடன் செய்வதே உண்மையான தவ முறை ஆகும்;

done so, it becomes true austerity;

அவ்வாறு விரும்பி நின்று அந்தத் தவத்தை முறையாகச் செய்பவர்கள் விண்ணுலகத் தேவர்களாகவே ஆகிவிடுவார்கள்.

and one who performs that austerity by rule becomes a celestial of heaven.

யோகத்தை அசையாத மனதுடன் இடைவிடாது முறைப்படி கடைபிடித்தால், இனிப் பிறவி எடுக்காத நிலையை இந்த உலகத்திலேயே இறையருள் கொடுத்துவிடும்;

Steady, unbroken yoga brings, even in this very world, the state of never being born again;

அந்த இறை சக்தியைத் தமக்குள் தரிசித்தால், தம்முடைய ஆன்மாவோடு ஒன்றாகக் கலந்து உள்ளே வீற்றிருக்கும் அந்த சக்தியை அறிந்துகொள்ளலாம்;

beholding that divine power within, one knows it as mingled together with one's own soul;

இறையோடு கலந்திருக்கும் அந்த நிலையில் இருப்பதற்கு வெட்கப்பட்டு விலகி நின்றால், மனம் ஐம்புலன்களின் வழியே ஆசைகளின் பின்னால் செல்லும் தவறான வழியையே கொடுக்கும்;

turning away in shame from that state only opens the wrong path, the mind following desire through the five senses;

ஆனால் வெட்கப்படாமல் அந்த நிலையிலேயே தொடர்ந்திருந்தால், உடலுக்குள் இருக்கும் மலங்களைச் சுட்டெரிக்கும் அங்கியாக இருக்கும் உத்தமனாகிய இறைவனாகவே தாமும் ஆகிவிடுவார்கள்.

but remaining unashamed in it, one becomes the noble one, the fire that burns away the body's impurities.

ஒன்றாக நிமிர்ந்திருக்கும் செம்மையான கோலைப் போல வீற்றிருந்து அழிவற்ற மாபெரும் தவத்தை மேற்கொண்டவர்களில்,

Standing steady as an upright, well-formed staff, in unfailing great austerity,

எத்தனையோ ஆயிரம் பேர் அதைத் தொடராமல் விட்டுவிட்டதால் வீழ்ந்துபோனவர்கள் எண்ணிக்கையில்லாமல் இருக்கிறார்கள்;

countless thousands have fallen away, by not continuing in it;

ஆனால் விட்டுவிடாமல் தொடர்ந்து அந்த மாபெரும் தவத்தை மேற்கொள்பவர்களைச் சித்தர்களும் தேவர்களும் மும்மூர்த்திகளும் பெருமையுடன்,

but the siddhars, the celestials and the three great gods, with pride,

"எங்களின் அப்பனான இறைவன் இவனே" என்று கூறி அவரோடு அன்பு கொண்டிருப்பார்கள்.

call those who continue "this is our father, this is God" and hold them in love.

யோகத்தைப் புரியும் யோகிக்கும் யோக நெறிக்கும் மூலமாக இருக்கும் மூன்று வழிமுறைகள் உள்ளன; இவற்றுள் ஒன்றி யோக முறையைக் கடைபிடிக்கும் யோகியர்,

Three methods stand as the source for the yogi and for the path of yoga; yogis who unite with them

யோகியாக ஆவதற்குத் தகுந்த கிரியைகளும் அவற்றின் மூல முறைகளும், சரியைகளும் அவற்றின் மூல முறைகளும்,

take up kiriyai and its root ways proper to becoming a yogi, and sariyai and its root ways,

யாகம் செய்வதைத் தவிர மற்ற அனைத்துச் செயல்களும் அடங்கிய சரியை முறைகளும் என ஒவ்வொன்றாக உள்ள மூன்று வகை முறைகளையும் தமக்கு ஏற்ற வழிமுறைகளாக எடுத்துக்கொண்டு,

and the sariyai methods covering every act other than performing yagam, each as suited to themselves;

அதன் வழியே புரியும் யோகத்தில் தாம் கொண்ட பக்திக்குள்ளேயே இறைவன் மேல் உண்மையான அன்பை வைத்திருப்பார்கள்.

and within the devotion so practiced, they keep true love fixed upon God.

யோகத்தில் சமயம் எனப்படும் சரியை என்பது, யோகத்தில் உள்ள பலவிதமான நெறிமுறைகளை உள்வாங்கிக்கொண்டு அவற்றைத் தவறாமல் கடைபிடிப்பதாகும்;

Sariyai, called samayam within yoga, is taking in and following without fail the many disciplines found within yoga;

யோகத்தில் விசேடம் எனப்படும் கிரியை என்பது எட்டு அங்கங்களைக் கொண்ட அட்டாங்க யோகமாகும்;

kiriyai, called viseedam within yoga, is the eight-limbed ashtanga yoga;

யோகத்தில் நிர்வாணம் எனப்படும் யோகம் என்பது, தமக்குக் கிடைக்கும் அசையாத மனதோடு எண்ணங்களற்ற நிலை தோன்றுவதாகும்;

yoga itself, called nirvanam within yoga, is the thought-free state arising with the unmoving mind one attains;

யோகத்தில் அபிடேகம் எனப்படும் ஞானம் என்பது, தம்மோடு ஒன்றாகக் கலந்திருக்கும் ஒளிமிக்க இறை சக்தியை உணர்வதாகும்.

jnana, called abhishekam within yoga, is realizing the radiant divine power mingled within oneself.
