திருமூலர் அருளிய திருமந்திரம்
குரு பாரம்பரியம்

இறைவனே குருவாய் நந்தி தேவராக வந்து உண்மைப் பொருளை உபதேசித்து, அருள் பெற்று 'நாதர்' என்று பெயர் பெற்றவர்களைத் தேடினால்,

If you seek those who received God's own grace, who came as Nandi Deva our guru and taught the true meaning, and so came to bear the name Nathar,

சிவயோகத்தில் சிறந்திருந்ததால் 'சிவயோக மாமுனிவர்' என்று பெயர் பெற்ற சனகர், சனந்தனர், சனாதனர், சனற்குமாரர் ஆகிய நால்வர்,

the four, Sanakar, Sanandhanar, Sanathanar and Sanatkumarar, who came to be called the great sages of Sivayoga because they excelled in that yoga,

தில்லையில் வந்து இறைவனின் திருநடனத்தை வணங்கிக் கண்டுகளித்த, ஆதிசேஷனின் அவதாரமான பதஞ்சலி முனிவரும், தன் தவத்திற்காகப் புலியின் கால்களைப் பெற்ற வியாக்கிரமபாதரும்,

the sage Patanjali, an incarnation of Adishesha, who came to Thillai and worshipped, watching God's own sacred dance with delight, and Vyagrapadar, who received a tiger's feet for his penance,

இவர்களுடன் திருமூலனாகிய யானும் சேர்ந்து மொத்தம் எட்டு பேர்கள் ஆவோம்.

together with these, I myself, Thirumoolan, make eight in all.

குருநாதராகிய நந்தியின் அருளினால்தான் யாம் 'நாதர்' என்ற பெயர் பெற்றோம்.

It was only by the grace of Nandi, our guru, that we came to bear the name Nathar.

நந்தியின் அருளினால்தான், இறந்து கிடந்த இடையனாகிய மூலனைக் கண்டு அழுதுகொண்டிருந்த பசுக்களின்மேல் இரக்கம் கொண்டு, அவனின் உடலில் யாம் புகுந்தோம்.

It was only by Nandi's grace that, moved by compassion for the cows weeping over Moolan, the cowherd who lay dead, we entered his body.

நந்தியின் அருள் இல்லாவிட்டால் இந்த நாட்டில் என்ன செய்துவிட முடியும்?

Without Nandi's grace, what could be accomplished in this land?

நந்தியின் அருளினால்தான், அவர் காட்டிய வழியின்படியே நானும் இருந்தேன்.

It was only by Nandi's grace that I too have remained here, following the very path he showed.

இறைவனிடமிருந்து பெற்ற மந்திரங்களை என்வழியில் பெற்றவர்களில் முதலாமவன் மாலாங்கன்.

The first among those who received the mantras from God, following in my line, is Malangan.

பின் வந்தவர்கள் இந்திரன், சோமன், பிரமன், உருத்திரன் ஆகியோர்.

After him came Indiran, Soman, Piraman and Rudran.

காலாங்கி நாதனும் கஞ்ச மலையனும் அவர்களுடன் சேர்ந்தனர்.

Kalangi Nathan and Kancha Malaiyan joined them.

இந்த ஏழு பேரும் என்வழியில் வந்தவர்கள் ஆவார்கள்.

These seven are the ones who follow in my own line.

மந்திரம் பெற்ற ஏழு பேர்களில் முதல் நால்வராகிய இந்திரன், சோமன், பிரமன், உருத்திரன் ஆகியோர், திசைக்கு ஒருவராய் நான்கு திசைகளுக்கும் நாதர்களாக இருந்தனர்.

The first four among the seven who received the mantras, Indiran, Soman, Piraman and Rudran, each stood as guru over one of the four directions.

குருவிடம் பெற்ற மந்திரத்துடன் அவர்களின் இறையனுபவமும் இறைவனின் அருளும் சேர்ந்து பல்வேறு பொருள்களை அவர்கள் கைக்கொண்டனர்.

The mantra received from their guru joined with their own experience of God and his grace, and they took up its many meanings.

தாங்கள் பெற்ற அருளையெல்லாம் மற்றவர்களும் பெற்று இன்புற வேண்டுமென்று அவர்கள் விரும்பினர்.

They wished that others too might receive and rejoice in all the grace they themselves had gained.

அவர்கள் நால்வரும் தேவர்களாகவும், மற்றவர்களுக்குக் குருநாதர்களாகவும் ஆனார்கள்.

These four became devas, and stood as guru-lords to others.

எம்மிடம் சீடர்களாக இருந்த ஏழு பேர்களுக்கும், எம்முள் இருந்து எம்மூலமாக மந்திரங்களை வழங்கியது இறைவனே.

It was God himself, dwelling within me, who gave the mantras to all seven of my disciples through me.

அவன் பிறப்பும் இறப்பும் இல்லாத பெருமையை உடையவன்.

He carries the greatness of being without birth and without death.

சூரியனின் ஒளி தோன்றுவதற்கு முன்பிருந்தே எப்போதும் மாபெரும் ஒளியாக இருப்பவன் அவன்.

He is the one who was a vast light even before the sun's own light ever appeared, and remains so always.

அவனுடைய பெருமைகளை அவன் அருளின்றி யாரிடமிருந்தும் தெரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாது; ஆகவே நாம் அருள் பெற்ற குருநாதர்களின் மூலமே அவனை அடையலாம்.

No one can come to know his greatness except through his own grace; and so we too can reach him only through the guru-lords who have received it.

ஏழு கடல்களும் பொங்கியெழுந்து, ஏழு மேகங்களும் மும்மாரி மழையைப் பொழிந்து, எட்டுத் திசைகளும் நீரால் நிரம்பினாலும்,

Even if the seven seas rise up and swell, the seven clouds pour down their triple rain, and all eight directions fill with water,

'பிறப்புக்கு உயர்வைத் தரும் நல் அறங்களைச் செய்துகொண்டே இருங்கள்' என்று அனைவரையும் பாதுகாத்து அருளுபவன் இறைவன்.

God still says, "Continue to perform the good deeds that raise up your birth," and so protects and blesses everyone.

சிவப்பான பவளம் போன்ற மேனியும், குளிர்கொண்ட மேகம் போன்ற விரிந்த சடையும் உடையவன் அவன்.

His form glows red as coral, and his spread matted locks are cool as a cloud.

தன் திருவடியைப் பணிந்து தொழுத நான்கு சனகாதி முனிவர்களுக்கும் (சனகர், சனந்தனர், சனாதனர், சனற்குமாரர்) அவன் அருளினான்.

He gave his grace to the four sages beginning with Sanaka, Sanakar, Sanandhanar, Sanathanar and Sanatkumarar, who bowed and worshipped at his holy feet.
