திருமூலர் அருளிய திருமந்திரம்
10. திருநீறு

உயிர்களின் எலும்பை மாலையாக அணிந்து இருக்கின்ற இறைவன் தனது உடலில் பூசுகின்ற, சாம்பல் கவசமாகிய திருநீற்றை,

The sacred ash, an armour of ash, that God, who wears the bones of living beings as a garland, smears upon his own body:

கொஞ்சமும் மங்காமல் பிரகாசமாகத் தெரியும்படி பூசிக் கொண்டு மகிழ்ச்சியை அடைபவர்களாகத் தாங்கள் இருந்தால்,

if people smear it so that it shows bright and does not dim in the least, and find joy in it,

அனைத்து வினைகளும் அவர்களிடம் தங்காமல் விலகி ஓடிவிடும்; சிவப் பரம்பொருளை அடைகின்ற வழிமுறை அவர்களுடன் சேர்ந்தே இருக்கும்.

then every deed fails to stay with them and flees away, and the way of reaching the supreme being that is Siva stays joined with them.

அதன் வழியே சென்று, பேரழகாக இருக்கின்ற இறைவனின் திருவடியை அவர்கள் சென்று அடைவார்கள்.

Going along that way, they reach the sacred feet of God, which are surpassingly beautiful.

அரச மரத்துடன் ஆல மரம், அத்தி மரம் ஆகிய மூன்று மரங்களின் சுள்ளிகளையும் ஒன்றாகக் கலந்து எரிப்பதால் வருவது அந்தச் சாம்பல் ஆகும்.

That ash is what comes of mixing as one the twigs of the three trees, the peepal together with the banyan and the fig, and burning them.

யாகத்தின் நெருப்பில் அவை எரிந்து சிறப்பான உருவமாக மாறி வருகின்ற சாம்பலே திருநீறு ஆகும்.

Burned in the fire of a sacrifice, they change into an excellent form, and that ash is the sacred ash.

அந்தத் திருநீற்றை உடல் முழுவதும் பூசிக் கொண்டு தவமிருந்து, எந்தவிதமான குற்றங்களும் இல்லாத நிலையை அடையப் பெற்ற, தர்மத்தின் வடிவமாக இருக்கின்ற தவசிகளின்,

Of those ascetics who smear that sacred ash over the whole body and remain in austerity, who reach a state free of every fault, and who are the very form of dharma,

உருவமானது, மனித நிலையை விட மேன்மை பெற்ற தேவர்களின் உயர்ந்த பிறப்பாகவே ஆகிவிடுகின்றது.

the form becomes the high birth of the devas themselves, exalted above the human state.
