தமக்குள் யார் பெரியவர் என்று பிரம்மனும் திருமாலும் வாதிட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது, சிவபெருமான் ஒரு மாபெரும் நெருப்புத் தூணாக நின்று, இத்தூணின் அடியையோ அல்லது உச்சியையோ காண்பவரே பெரியவர் என்று அறிவித்தார். பிரம்மன், பறந்து உச்சியைக் கண்டுவிடலாம் என்று நினைத்து அன்னப் பறவையாகப் பறந்து சென்றார். திருமால், பூமியைக் குடைந்து அடியைக் கண்டுவிடலாம் என்று நினைத்து பன்றியாகக் குடைந்து சென்றார். இருவரும் தங்கள் எண்ணப்படி அடியையும் உச்சியையும் காணாமல் பூமியின் மேல் மீண்டும் வந்து நின்றனர். அடியைக் காண முடியவில்லை என்று திருமால் ஒப்புக்கொண்டார். பிரம்மன் உச்சியைக் கண்டுவிட்டேன் என்று பொய் கூறினான்.
இப்பாடலில் திருமூலர் ஒரு புராணக் கதையைச் சித்தரிப்பது போல் இருந்தாலும், இறைவனின் திருவடிகளைக் கண்டு அவன் திருவடிகளின் கீழ் இருப்பதே பேரின்பம் என்பதை அனுபவத்தில் கண்டு அறிந்த திருமூலர் (பாடல் #82இல் கூறியபடி), அந்தப் பேரின்பத்தை அனைவரும் அடையும் வழியாகவே திருமந்திரத்தை வழங்கினேன் என்பதையே இங்கு உணர்த்துகிறார்.
While Brahma and Thirumal were arguing over who among them was greater, Sivaperuman stood as a vast pillar of fire and declared that whoever could see either the base or the summit of this pillar would be the greater one. Brahma thought he could fly up and see the summit, and took the form of a swan and flew upward. Thirumal thought he could dig down and see the base, and took the form of a boar and burrowed downward. Neither found what they sought, and both came back and stood together again upon the earth. Thirumal admitted that he had not been able to see the base. Brahma lied, and claimed that he had seen the summit.
Though Thirumoolar seems in this verse merely to be depicting a mythological story, what he makes known here is this: having come to know through his own experience, as he said in verse 82, that supreme bliss lies in beholding God's holy feet and remaining beneath them, he gave the Thirumantiram precisely as the way for everyone to attain that same supreme bliss.
