பண்டைய காலத்திலிருந்தே இவ்வுலகில் உள்ளோர் பலவிதமான தெய்வங்களை வணங்கினர்; ஒவ்வொரு தெய்வத்திற்கும் வரைமுறைகளையும் விதிமுறைகளையும் வகுத்தனர். இவ்வாறு பல விதிமுறைகளை வகுத்து, பலவிதமான துதிகளையும் தோத்திரங்களையும் இசையோடு பாடவல்லவர்கள் கூட, உண்மை என்ன என்று உணராமல், உண்மையான ஞானத்தை அடையாமல், நெஞ்சத்தில் அமைதியின்றித் துன்பப்பட்டுக்கொண்டே இருக்கின்றனர்.
Since ancient times, people in this world have worshipped many different deities, laying down rules and rites for each one. But even those skilled enough to lay down many such rules, and to sing many kinds of hymns and praises set to music, do not grasp what the truth really is. Without reaching true wisdom, they remain troubled, their hearts without peace.
