ஒளி விடுகின்ற பேரொளிப் பிழம்பான சிவமே, படைத்தலில் பிரம்மன், காத்தலில் திருமால், அழித்தலில் உருத்திரன் என மூவராகவும் நிற்கிறது. அருளலில் மகேசுவரன், மறைத்தலில் சதாசிவன் என்று ஐந்து பேராகவும் நின்று செய்யும் இத்தொழில்கள் அனைத்தும், ஆதியிலிருந்தே இருக்கும் பரம்பொருளான அச்சிவமே செய்வது என்பதை மூடர்கள் அறியாதிருக்கிறார்கள். அவர்கள் செய்யும் தொழிலை வைத்து ஈசன், நெடுமால், அயன் என்று அவர்களை வேறு வேறு தெய்வங்களாகக் கருதிக்கொள்கிறார்கள். அவர்களில் யார் பெரியவர் யார் சிறியவர் என்று வீணாகச் சண்டையிட்டுக்கொண்டு புலம்புகின்றார்கள்.
It is Shivam, the very mass of great light that shines, that stands as the three, Brahma in creation, Thirumal in preservation, and Rudra in destruction. Together with them, as the five, Mahesvara in bestowing grace and Sadasivan in concealment, this same Shivam, the supreme reality existing from the very beginning, carries out all these works, though fools do not know this. They take these figures, on the basis of the work each performs, calling them Isan, tall Mal, Ayan, to be separate deities, and quarrel uselessly among themselves, and lament, over who among them is greater and who is lesser.
