  படர்ந்து விரிந்த சடையைக் கொண்டு, மாபெரும் தவத்தைக் கொண்டவனாக இருக்கின்ற இறைவனை உறுதியாகப் பற்றிக்கொண்ட பக்தர்களுக்கு,

  To the devotees who have taken firm hold of God, who wears the spreading matted hair and who holds the great austerity,

  அவர்களது வாழ்வில் எந்த விதமான துன்பங்களும் வந்து சேராதபடி இறைவன் அருளுவான்.

  God gives his grace so that no suffering of any kind comes into their lives.

  அப்படி இல்லாமல், தாம் செய்ய வேண்டிய கடமைகளைத் துறந்து, தவம் செய்கின்றோம் என்று காட்டிற்குள் வீற்றிருந்து முயற்சி செய்கின்றவர்களின் உண்மையான தவத் தன்மை என்னவென்று பார்த்தால்,

  But if one looks at what the true nature of the austerity is of those who instead renounce the duties they ought to perform and sit in the forest saying they are doing austerity,

  அவர்கள் தவத்திற்கான உடல் அடையாளங்களை மட்டுமே கடைப்பிடித்துக்கொண்டு செய்வதால், அது தவம் ஆகாது; அது ஒரு விதமான பித்துத் தன்மையே ஆகும்.

  since they keep only to the bodily marks of austerity in what they do, it is not austerity at all. It is a kind of madness.
