  மனம் ஒன்று கூடித் தவம் செய்து, இறைவனின் பேரழகு வாய்ந்த திருவடிகளைத் தரிசித்தேன்.

  With the mind gathered into one I did austerity, and I beheld the feet of God in all their great beauty.

  அவரை அடைய வேண்டும் என்று எமக்குள்ளேயே தேடித் தவம் செய்து கண்டு, சிவனின் திருவடியையே சரணாகதியாக அடைந்தேன்.

  Longing to reach him, I searched within myself and did austerity and found him, and I took the feet of Siva alone as my refuge.

  மனம் ஒன்றுபடாமலும், இறைவனை அடைய வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் இல்லாமலும், உடலை வருத்திக்கொண்டும், வெறும் உலக ஆசைகளுக்காகவும் தவம் செய்வது குற்றமாகும்.

  To do austerity without the mind gathered into one, without any thought of reaching God, wearing the body down, and only for worldly desires, is a fault.

  இவைகளையெல்லாம் நீக்கித் தவம் செய்யாமல், தமக்குள்ளேயே மாறுபட்ட சிந்தனைகளால் குழம்பிக்கொண்டு பல உலகத்தவர்கள் செய்கின்றதெல்லாம் எந்தத் தவம் ஆகும்? ஆகாது.

  And when people of the world do not clear all of these away and do austerity, but stay confused within themselves by contradictory thoughts, what austerity is any of what they do? It is none.
