'சிவயநம' என்னும் ஐந்தெழுத்து மந்திரத்தில் 'சிவ' இறைவியையும், 'நம' இறைவனையும், 'ய' ஆன்மாவையும் குறிக்கும். இந்த ஐந்தெழுத்தும் ஒன்றுக்கொன்று முதலாக மாறி மாறி வரும்படி சுழற்றி எழுதப்படுகின்றன.
