Dwelling in thought upon the sixteen truths that come from the beginning is meditation on the dear life. In its ordinary state, awareness clings to the senses. If that awareness is drawn back from the senses, what follows is the first division, parāttiyānam, dwelling in thought upon the two powers who are as mother and father. If Sivan is set within awareness as the guru, what follows is the second division, sivattiyānam. The verse says that parāttiyānam and sivattiyānam are the two divisions of yoga.
