As a river's flood erodes and ruins its banks, so the five senses of the five elements, the body's feeling, the eye's seeing, the ear's hearing, the nose's smelling and the mouth's tasting, erode and ruin the body. If the way in which the five senses are contained within the body is grasped, the truth that the world is perishable and Sivam alone is imperishable can be grasped, and grasping that, worldly attachment is cut off. The five elements that govern the body must also be governed by the mind; the outward sensations of the five elements, that is feeling, sight, sound, smell and taste, must be sensed inward instead; the mind must be fixed in one place at the mūlādhāram; and the soul within the body must be joined with God. The verse calls doing all of this together dhāraṇā.

grasping the nature of the five elements that inhere in it and coming free of them,
