Yama, niyama, the many asanas, pranayama that brings good, pratyahara, dharana of great victory, dhyana and samadhi, these eight parts together are the path of ashtanga yoga that comes to those who have good deeds to their credit. The first, yama, is the driving away of evils; if this is kept, all the evils within us leave. The second, niyama, is the gaining of good; the meditating on Sivam who is light, and on Shakti who is the power of that light, is niyama. The third, asana, is the state of settling the body; keeping the waist, shoulders and head straight, and giving the spine its freedom without troubling it.
The fourth, pranayama, is the proper mastering of the breath, that is, the mastering of the life force called prana. The fifth, pratyahara, is the preventing of the mind from going outward through the five senses, turning it inward, and reflecting so as to know the rare treasure within the mind.
The sixth, dharana, is the fixing of the mind on a single object and realizing oneself. The seventh, dhyana, is the one pointed and unbroken reflection of the mind. The eighth, samadhi, is the attaining of the light of wisdom that is the goal of all our efforts; one who wishes to reach God must gain strength through body, mind, virtue and wisdom.
So these eight parts from yama to samadhi together are what ashtanga yoga is.
