உயிர்களின் வகைகளில் மூன்றாவதாக இருப்பவர்கள், ஆணவம், கன்மம், மாயை ஆகிய மும்மலங்களையும் கொண்ட அஞ்ஞானர். இவர்கள் முத்தர், சாதகர், சகலர் என மூன்று வகையினராக இருக்கின்றனர். முன் ஜென்ம நல்வினைப் பயனால் இறைவனே குருவாக மனித உருவில் வந்து கொடுத்த ஞானத்தைப் பெற்று, மும்மலம் கொண்ட தம் ஆன்மாவைச் சிவத்தோடு இரண்டறக் கலந்து முக்தி பெற்றோர் முத்தர். முன் ஜென்ம வினைப் பயனால் இறையருளைப் பெற்று தியானம், தவம், யோகப்பயிற்சி, பூஜைகள் செய்துகொண்டிருப்பவர் சாதகர்; இவர்கள் தாம் மேற்கொண்ட சாதகங்களின் பயனால் மும்மலங்களால் உருவாகும் துன்பங்களில் பாதிக்கப்படாமல் இருப்பர். மாயையால் உலக வாழ்க்கையிலேயே அமிழ்ந்து கிடந்து மும்மலங்களின் வலிமை அதிகமாகப் பெற்றவர் சகலர்.
The third kind of soul are the agnyanar, who carry all three impurities of egoism, karma and maya. They are of three kinds, muktar, sadhakar and sakalar. Those who, by the fruit of good deeds from a former birth, received the wisdom given by God himself who came as guru in human form, and who merged their three-impurity soul inseparably with Siva and attained liberation, are the muktar. Those who, by the fruit of deeds from a former birth, received God's grace and remain engaged in meditation, austerity, yogic practice and worship are the sadhakar; by the fruit of the disciplines they have undertaken, they remain unaffected by the sorrows the three impurities cause. Those who lie immersed in worldly life through maya and carry the greatest strength of the three impurities are the sakalar.
