The soul, which arose from God, gathers deeds to itself through the acts it performs in order to exhaust its own desires by experiencing them. So that those deeds may be worked out, God sets illusion in place, gives the soul a body too, and causes it to take birth. And out of the compassion that the soul born in this way should not be caught in the whirl of deeds and take birth again and again, that God, who is mingled in everything in the world, brings it into the company of devotees who know the ways of reaching him and who stand to it as guru, and sets within it a mind able to think of him always. Because it dwells in the thought of God, illusion perishes, the ego that says I perishes with it, and God brings about the true knowing by which the soul comes and reaches him again.
