Just as a seed sown in marshy mud takes that very mud as its base and rises out of it as a growing crop, the soul, having its origin in God who is ancient to everything, comes forth from him and is born in the world as a fetus. Just as a grown crop, once used and destroyed, becomes soil once more but cannot go back into the very seed that was sown, the soul too, once born as a fetus in the world, having lived and died, cannot go back and rejoin God directly. And so, having no life of its own, the soul is pushed into the cycle of sangaram, born again as a fetus through Brahma, protected and raised by Thirumal, and dying again in sangaram once more. Just as a crop born in the soil mingles back into the soil, and when that soil itself one day vanishes, even the trace of the crop is destroyed, so too the soul that is born and dies again and again in the world, when it finishes all its deeds, wholly renounces the trace called 'I' (anava mala), removes the illusions and realizes the truth, it goes and subsides into the very God from whom it arose.
Thirumoolar, who figures the soul as the crop and God as the marsh, gives through this simile an explanation of the philosophy of sangaram and why it happens. The soul, first arisen from God, is born in the world, gets caught in the cycle of birth through its deeds, and, once it has finished all its deeds, comes back and subsides in God once more; this alone is the philosophy of sangaram and its fruit.
