நித்த சங்காரம் என்பது, உயிர்கள் உறங்கும்போது தம்மைச் சுற்றி என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதை முற்றிலும் அறியாதிருக்கும் நிலை. வைத்த சங்காரம் என்பது, உயிர்கள் இளைப்பாற உறங்கும்போது எழும் கனவு நிலை. சுத்த சங்காரம் என்பது, உடலை விட்டு உயிர் பிரிந்த ஆன்மா ஆணவ மலத்திலேயே தங்கி, மீண்டும் பிறக்கவும் முடியாமல் இறைவனிடம் சேரவும் முடியாமல் எந்தச் செயலும் புரிய முடியாமல் கிடக்கும் கேவல நிலை. உய்த்த சங்காரம் என்பது, இறைவனது திருவருளால் ஆன்மா உண்மைப் பொருளாகிய இறைவனுடன் சென்று இரண்டறக் கலந்துவிடும் நிலை.
நித்த சங்காரம் என்பது, உறங்கும்போது 'நான்' என்ற எண்ணமே அழிந்திருக்கும் நிலை. வைத்த சங்காரம் என்பது, உறங்கும்போது கனவில் எல்லாமே தன்னுடையது போலத் தோன்றினாலும், விழித்தவுடன் எதுவும் தனதன்று என்று அனைத்தும் அழிந்துவிடும் நிலை. சுத்த சங்காரம் என்பது, உடல் அழிந்தபின் ஆன்மா 'தான்' என்ற அகங்காரத்தால் மீண்டும் உடலெடுக்கவும் முடியாமல் இறைவனுடன் கலக்கவும் முடியாமல் இருக்கும் நிலை; இதையே பாடல் கேவல நிலை என்கிறது. உய்த்த சங்காரம் என்பது, உடலும் உயிரும் அனைத்துமே அழிந்து இறைவனுடன் கலக்கும் நிலை.
Nitya sangaram is the state in which souls, while asleep, are wholly unaware of what happens around them. Vaitta sangaram is the state of dream that arises when souls sleep to rest. Suddha sangaram is the isolated, kevala state in which the soul, having left the body, remains held in anava mala, unable to be born again, unable to reach God, and unable to perform any act at all. Uyta sangaram is the state in which, by God's own grace, the soul goes and merges inseparably with God, the true substance.
Nitya sangaram is the state in which, while asleep, the very thought 'I' is dissolved. Vaitta sangaram is the state in which, while asleep, everything in the dream seems to be one's own, but the moment one wakes, all of it is seen to be not one's own and dissolves entirely. Suddha sangaram is the state in which, after the body is destroyed, the soul, held by the ego of 'I', can neither take another body nor merge with God; the verse itself calls this the kevala state. Uyta sangaram is the state in which body and life and everything else are destroyed and the soul merges with God.
