இவ்வுலகில் நிகழும் செயல்கள் அனைத்திற்கும் காரணமாக இருப்பவன் ஈசனே என்பதை அறிந்த தண்டி, மணலைச் சேர்த்து ஒரு லிங்கம் அமைத்து, அந்த மணல் லிங்கத்தைப் பசும்பாலால் வழிபட்டான். பசும்பால் வீணாவதைக் கண்டு கோபம் கொண்ட தண்டியின் தந்தை, அந்த மணல் லிங்கத்தைக் காலால் எட்டி உதைத்தார். தந்தையின் இச்செயலால் கோபம் கொண்ட தண்டி, பசுவை மேய்க்க வைத்திருந்த தன் கைக்கம்பை எடுக்க, அது மழு என்னும் ஆயுதமாக மாறியது. அந்த மழுவால் தன் தந்தையின் இரண்டு கால்களையும் வெட்டினான். தண்டீசனின் பக்தியைக் கண்ட சிவபெருமான், தாம் சூடியிருந்த கொன்றை மாலையை எடுத்து, மகிழ்வுடன் சண்டேசுரருக்கு அணிவித்தார்.

Angered to see the fresh milk go to waste, Dandi's father kicked the sand-lingam with his foot. Enraged by his father's act, Dandi picked up the staff he used to herd the cow, and it turned into the weapon called mazhu. With that mazhu he cut off both his father's legs. Seeing Dandi's devotion, Shiva took the konrai garland he himself wore and, with delight, placed it upon Chandeswara.
