ஆதிமூலமாகிய சிவ பரம்பொருளை அடைய வேண்டும் என்று சக்தி உறுதி எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, இமய மலையின் அரசனாகிய பர்வதராஜனின் மகளாகப் பிறந்தாள். பல காலம் உறுதியுடன் மாபெரும் தவம் செய்து, தேவர்களும் அறியாத வழிபாட்டு முறைகளை, தேவர்களும் அறியும்படி முறையாகப் பூஜை செய்து, இறைவனை அடைந்தாள்.
Resolving that she must attain Shiva, the primal source and the supreme, Shakti took birth as the daughter of Parvatharaja, the king of the Himalaya. For a long time, holding fast to her resolve, she performed a great tapas, and by worshipping in the proper manner, with modes of worship unknown even to the devas, in a way that the devas too came to know, she attained the Lord.
