மிருகண்டு முனிவரும் அவரது மனைவி மருத்துவவதி தேவியாரும் தமக்குக் குழந்தைப் பேறு வேண்டி இறைவனை வேண்ட, குறைந்த ஆயுளுடைய அறிவாளியான குழந்தை வேண்டுமா, அல்லது நீண்ட ஆயுளுடைய அறிவற்ற குழந்தை வேண்டுமா என்று இறைவன் அவர்களைக் கேட்டார். அவர்கள் அறிவாளியான குழந்தையையே கேட்டு, மார்க்கண்டேயன் என்னும் குழந்தையைப் பெற்றனர். மார்க்கண்டேயர் பிறந்ததிலிருந்தே, அவரது பெற்றோர் ஆயுள் முடியும்போது இறைவனையே சரணடைய வேண்டும் என்று அவருக்குப் போதித்து வந்தனர். அதனால் மிகச்சிறந்த இறை பக்தரான மார்க்கண்டேயர் தம் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதையும் இறை பூஜையிலேயே கழித்தார். அவரது ஆயுட்காலம் முடியும் நாளில், மேலுலகிற்கு அழைத்துச் செல்ல வந்த எமதர்மன், எந்தப் பூஜையில் இருந்தாலும் ஆயுள் முடிந்தவரை அழைத்துச் செல்வது தம் கடமை என்று எண்ணி, அவர்மேல் பாசக் கயிற்றை வீசினார். சிவபூஜையில் இருந்த மார்க்கண்டேயர் சிவலிங்கத்தைக் கட்டி அணைத்திருந்த நேரமாதலால், அந்தப் பாசக்கயிறு அவரோடு சிவலிங்கத்தின் மீதும் விழுந்தது. உடனே அதிலிருந்து இறைவன் வெளிப்பட்டு, என் பூஜையில் இருக்கும் அடியவர் எவரையும் கொண்டு செல்லும் உரிமை உமக்கு இல்லை என்று எமதர்மனைக் காலால் எட்டி உதைத்துத் தள்ளிவிட்டு, மார்க்கண்டேயருக்கு என்றும் பதினாறு வயதுடன் சிரஞ்சீவியாக இருக்கும் வரம் அளித்தார்.
When Mrikandu Muni and his wife Marudavathi Devi prayed to the Lord for the gift of a child, the Lord asked them whether they wanted a wise child with a short life or a foolish child with a long life. They asked for the wise child, and were blessed with the child Markandeya. From his birth, his parents taught him that when his life came to its end he must surrender to none but the Lord. So Markandeya, the finest of devotees, spent his whole life in worship of the Lord. On the day his lifespan was to end, Yama, coming to take him to the world above, and thinking it his duty to take one whose life had ended whatever worship he might be engaged in, cast his noose of pasam over him. Markandeya, who was at that moment in worship of Shiva with his arms clasped around the Shiva-lingam, had the noose fall upon the lingam along with him. At once the Lord came forth from it, told Yama, "You have no right to take any devotee found in my worship," kicked Yama away with his foot, and granted Markandeya the boon of remaining forever sixteen years old, deathless.

The Lord emerged from it, kicked Yama away, and granted Markandeya the boon of remaining forever sixteen years old, deathless.
