The sages of Daruka Vanam, without worshipping the Lord, held the conceit that their own power of mantras exceeded the Lord's grace, and that they could attain anything through the mantras they had learned. To dispel their ignorance, the Lord took the beautiful form of Bhikshatana and went to the sages' homes, standing before their wives to beg alms. The wives, enchanted by his beauty, began to follow him in a daze. Seeing their wives so enchanted, following a strange man, the sages grew angry, and by the strength of their tapas raised three kinds of fire and, through their mantras, called into being from them (from Ahavaniyam the forest fire, Garhapatyam the household fire, and Dakshinagni the fire of scripture) a great elephant of dark hue. They believed this elephant, born from the sacrificial fire, would destroy him. But he split open the elephant that came out of that fire so that the forest itself shook, killed it, and wrapped its hide about himself as a covering, and made the sages of Daruka Vanam realize that the three kinds of fire, the mantras spoken over them and the very fruit that comes from those mantras, were all himself. This story took place at the shrine of Thiruvazhuvur.
When the anger that comes upon souls swells the "I" of ego, so that one no longer knows what one does or what one says, and one becomes like a maddened elephant, souls surrender to the Lord, and the Lord destroys that anger and that ego, and makes them realize that everything is himself.

He made the sages realize that the three kinds of fire, the mantras and their fruit were all himself. When anger swells ego into a maddened elephant, the Lord destroys that anger and ego in the souls who surrender to him.
