Those who say that the Lord, who wears the Ganga in his own reddened matted hair and who is the first and root of all things, is the one who burned a place called Muppuram, do not grasp that what is truly Muppuram to them is the three impurities, anavam, kanmam and mayai. Not realizing that it is these the Lord destroys, none who speak of him as having burned three physical cities truly knows the manner in which those cities were burned.
The story behind this verse took place at the shrine of Thiruvathigai. Vidhyunmali, Tharakaksha and Kamalaksha, the three sons of the asura Tarakasura, were the finest of devotees. All three did fierce tapas toward Brahma and won three forts that could fly instantly to any place they wished, together with the boon that the forts could be destroyed only by a single arrow, and only when all three stood joined as one. Once granted this boon they threw the entire world of the devas into turmoil. Unable to bear their power, the devas, Brahma and Vishnu pleaded with the Lord. His heart softened, and taking a beautiful form as Bhairava, he asked the divine architect Vishwakarma to build him a chariot: the sun and moon became its wheels, the four Vedas its yoked horses, Lord Brahma its charioteer, Mount Meru its bow, the serpent Vasuki the string strung upon it, Agni the arrow's tip, Vayu the arrow's tail, and Vishnu himself the arrow. With this he came to Muppuram. Out of the great mercy of not wishing to destroy asuras so excellent in devotion to him, he opened his third eye and cast a single glance, and at once all three forts burned to ash. The three fell at the Lord's feet and worshipped him, and the Lord took them as his own, making two of them the guardians at his temple gate and accepting the third as the one who receives the kumbhabhishekam performed in his temple.
