The devas, who understood the great mercy of the Lord's feet, the Lord who pervades all creation, who bears both the heavenly world and the earthly world, and who gives refuge to whoever seeks him, grew angry at Brahma. Because he performed the work of creation and had five heads, Brahma was filled with the conceit that he alone stood highest among the three deities, and so did not grasp the mercy of the Lord's feet. Seeing that Brahma's conceit was harming the work of creation, the Lord took the form of Bhairava and plucked off one of Brahma's five heads with his fingernail. He caught the blood that flowed from that plucked head in the same skull and made Vishnu accept it, and so granted his grace. This story took place at the shrine of Thirukkandiyur.
The ego and self-conceit within souls, the sense of "I", keep them from realizing who they truly are, destroy their good thoughts and qualities, and block them from reaching the Lord as well. Further, because of ego and self-conceit, souls take birth again and again, and this affects the births that follow too. For example, if a soul has, say, ten births to go by its karma, ego and self-conceit only add to that count and affect the births still to come. When souls caught in such births plead, "My Lord, save me," the Lord, who shows great mercy to whoever seeks him, cuts off that ego and self-conceit at the root and gives it over to Vishnu, who protects souls, and grants his grace so that ego and self-conceit do not arise again in that soul.

He made Vishnu accept the blood that flowed from that head. The inner meaning is that the Lord cuts away the ego and self-conceit within the soul at the root, gives it to Vishnu, and grants his grace so it does not return.
