Daksha, the eldest son of Brahma, did tapas and won the boon that the devas would bow to him. Filled with the pride that boon brought, he became lord over all creation. He obtained Goddess Parvati as his own daughter. When Parvati saw Shiva, her illusion of separateness vanished and she was united with him. Angered that his daughter had joined the Lord without her father's consent, Daksha performed a great sacrifice meaning to destroy the Lord, and in it, by not inviting the Lord and by withholding the share of the offering due to him, committed a crime greater than murder. Enraged at that crime, the Lord took the form of Bhairava, severed Daksha's head, and cast it into the sacrificial fire. Afterward, when Parvati and Brahma pleaded that Daksha was needed for the world's good, the Lord's heart softened, and he took the head of a goat, fixed it upon Daksha's body, and brought him back to life. Daksha's pride was destroyed, and he worshipped the Lord. This story took place at the shrine of Thirupparaiyalur.
Souls are born to work out their karma, and once the karma is spent they wait to reach the Lord. But pride dwells within souls like a ruler, insisting that only what it says is right and refusing to hear what another says, driving the soul about at its own word and blocking it from going to the Lord. When the soul pleads, "My Lord, save me from pride," the Lord cuts off the head of that ruler called pride and grants his grace to souls. If pride is destroyed completely, one may reach the Lord at once, but souls can reach the Lord only once their karma is spent. So until the karma is spent, the Lord grants souls a thought like the goat's head, the thought that whatever happens, good or ill, is the Lord's own doing.

The Lord's heart softened, and he fixed a goat's head upon him and brought him to life; Daksha's pride was destroyed. The inner meaning is that the Lord cuts off the pride that dwells in the soul like a ruler, and until karma is spent, grants souls the thought that all that happens is the Lord's own doing.
