மதுவானது குடிப்பவரின் புத்தியில் தடுமாற்றத்தையும் மனச் சஞ்சலத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தும். உண்மை பேசுவதைத் தடுத்துப் பொய் பேச வைக்கும். மது அருந்துபவர்கள் இன்பத்துக்காகப் பொதுமகளிரை நாடி அவர்களிடம் மயங்கி இருப்பார்கள். இவர்களுக்கு, நல்லறிவைக் கொடுக்கும் உண்மை ஞானத்தினால் கிடைக்கும் பேரானந்தம் ஒரு போதும் கிடைக்காது.
Liquor brings unsteadiness into the intellect of the one who drinks it, and restlessness into the mind. It blocks the speaking of truth and makes such a one speak falsehood. Those who drink liquor go seeking common women for their pleasure and remain infatuated with them. To these people the great bliss that comes through true wisdom, the wisdom that gives good understanding, will never come at any time.
