One who is called a brahmin is one who does these six duties: reciting the Vedas; teaching the Vedas one has learned to others; tending the yagna according to Vedic order; teaching others how to perform the yagna; giving alms without refusing anyone who comes asking; and receiving alms from others. Beyond this, he must also hold these ten qualities: 1. being pure; 2. abiding in the grace of God; 3. eating a measured amount; 4. being patient; 5. being upright; 6. holding to truth without ever lying; 7. cultivating fierce dedication in the cause of truth; 8. not entertaining thoughts of lust; 9. not entertaining thoughts of theft; 10. not entertaining thoughts of killing: he must know these ten for himself, and cause others to know them too, and walk the path of discipline according to them. The one who, never once failing in the penance he keeps or the good deeds he performs, stands always firm, and who performs for others every rite, whether auspicious or inauspicious, is the true brahmin.
