Living beings, at the very moment they are born into this world as the fruit of their karma, are born already bound by a fixed span of days, reckoned by how many breaths they are to draw in a day. Of these fixed days, the days that remain youthful are only a very few. It is best to spend those youthful days always singing and worshipping the eternal God. But not knowing how to seize and cast away the many kinds of desire that block thoughts of God from arising even during those youthful days, living beings become slaves to desire, lose their lives to it, and then grow old and die. I myself have lived to see that living beings who, without becoming slaves to desire, lived in thought of God during the time they had life, do reach God.
