உரைmeaning
உடலாகிய இந்தப் பையினுள் புலன்களாகிய ஐந்து பெரிய ஊசிகள் இருக்கின்றன - பார்த்தல் என்னும் கண், கேட்டல் என்னும் காது, பேசுதல் என்னும் வாய், நுகர்தல் என்னும் மூக்கு, தொடுதல் என்னும் தோல். இந்த ஐந்து பெரிய ஊசிகளும் தம் விருப்பம்போலப் பறக்கும் பறவைகளைப் போன்றவை. வெயில் காலத்தில் அங்கும் இங்கும் பறந்து விருப்பம்போல் திரியும் பறவைகள், பனிக்காலத்தில் பறக்கச் செல்ல வழியின்றிக் குளிரில் நடுங்கிக்கொண்டு கூட்டிற்குள்ளேயே இருக்கும். அதுபோலவே, இளமைக் காலங்களில் ஆசைகளுக்கு வயப்பட்டு ஐந்து புலன்களையும் அவற்றின் விருப்பம்போலப் பறக்கவிட்டால், பின்பு வயதாகி முதுமை வந்தபின் இறைவனை அடையும் எண்ணம் இருந்தாலும், பறவை நீண்ட குளிர்காலத்தில் கூட்டிற்குள்ளேயே இருந்து இறந்துபோவதைப்போல, ஐந்து புலன்களும் உடலுக்குள்ளேயே அடங்கிக் கிடந்து, உடலுக்குள் இருந்த உயிர் பறந்துபோய், அவற்றுள் இருந்த ஐந்து புலன்களும் முற்றும் செயலிழந்துவிடும்.
உயிரோடும் இளமையோடும் இருக்கும்போதே ஆசை செல்லும் வழியில் புலன்களைச் செலுத்தாமல், அவற்றைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தி, இறைவன்மேல் நாட்டத்தை ஏற்படுத்தி, அவனை அடையும் வழிகளைத் தேடி அடைய வேண்டும்.
Within this bag that is the body live five great needles, the senses: sight, the eye; hearing, the ear; speech, the mouth; smell, the nose; and touch, the skin. These five great needles are like birds that fly wherever they please. In summer, birds fly here and there roaming as they wish, but in winter, having no way to fly out, they shiver in the cold and stay confined within the nest. In the same way, if in the days of youth one lets the five senses fly wherever their desires please, then later, when old age comes and one wishes to reach God, just as a bird trapped through a long winter within its nest eventually dies there, the five senses too remain shut up within the body, the soul that was within the body flies away, and the five senses that were in it lose all power to act.
While one still has life and youth, do not let the senses run wherever desire leads; instead, restrain them, turn one's inclination towards God, and seek out and reach the ways to attain him.
