The small intelligence of living beings comes to them through their five senses (eye, ear, nose, mouth, body), and it becomes absorbed in the five sensations, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching, and so perishes without ever knowing the supreme wisdom. Like those who wade into a river not knowing its depth and drown, living beings drown in worldly pleasures and merely pass their birth. That the supreme wisdom lies hidden within this small intelligence, and that knowing it lets one realise the true reality, sever the worldly bonds of attachment, and reach God, the supreme being will make known through a sign, coming as the guru.

Like those who wade into a river not knowing its depth and drown, this small intelligence too perishes without ever knowing the supreme wisdom.
In the same way living beings drown in worldly pleasures and merely pass their birth.
