This body of a man, once the diseases and the deeds done are all spent, grows old one day, its pulse and nerves fail, its bones ripen and slacken, and it dies. After the death others come and place a hand at the nose of that body to see whether there is breath, and once it is certain there is none they cover the body with cloth, carry it to the burning ground, perform the rites, and bury or burn it. Later, at the annual rite, they set out rice for crows, thinking it will reach the one who has died. The life of the one who died is not there; and that rice set out for the crows is not consumed by them. Rather than set your longing on this body, which has no worth once dead, it is better to set it on the God who endures for ever.

At the annual rite they set out rice for crows, thinking it will reach the one who died; but that soul is not there, and the rice is not consumed by them. So it is better to set your longing not on this worthless body but on the God who endures for ever.
