A man's two legs are the walls; the spine is the ridge beam that stands between those walls and carries the roof; the thirty-two ribs around the body are the battens set around the walls to keep them from falling; and the head is the roof at the top of the ridge beam. When the roof above a house parts from it, only the bare walls and the battens that hold them remain standing, and that house becomes unusable. In the same way, once the breath has gone out by way of the head the body too dies, and only flesh and bones remain standing. The life that has gone out stands without knowing by what way it might enter that body again. Once the soul has parted from the body, that body never comes to life again.

The two legs are the walls; the spine is the ridge beam that carries the roof.
The thirty-two ribs around the body are the battens set around the walls to keep them from falling.
As a house becomes useless when the roof parts from it, so when the breath goes out by way of the head the body dies and only flesh and bone remain.
The life that has gone out stands without knowing the way back in; a body the soul has left never comes to life again.
