The body of a living being is like the clay pot a potter makes. However many pots the potter makes, the clay he uses is one and the same. In the same way, though the bodies of living beings are of many kinds, the soul is one. Though made of the same clay, those pots are of two kinds: one fired and therefore firm, the other unfired and still raw clay. Living beings too come into the world bearing bodies of these two kinds, and the evil deeds they have done accompany the body. Just as unfired raw clay pots dissolve when rain falls from the sky and turn back into clay, so too the beings who have no longing for God, bound in their own evil deeds and remaining raw clay, perish one day. The people who live a worldly life and die in this way are beyond counting. So do not set your longing on the impermanent body; set it on the God who endures for ever.
